We have big news: the Minneapolis City Council voted 8-4 to approve the redesign of Lyndale Ave S! Now, the project proposal will head to the Mayor’s desk for its final stamp.
Let’s keep the pressure on Mayor Frey! Can you take three minutes to send a message in support of a Livable Lyndale?
As people in Minneapolis experience historically hazardous air quality from raging wildfires in northern Minnesota, Council Member Stevenson affirmed during the vote that, “This [design] is climate action and we are in a climate emergency.” Vehicle transportation is the largest source of pollution in Minnesota, and building streets that prioritize the needs of people walking, rolling, biking, and taking transit is critical to protect the health of our communities and stop our climate from warming further. Tell Mayor Frey to approve the design’s climate-friendly upgrades to Lyndale Ave S.
The redesign will make it much easier for all residents to catch a bus or pedal through the neighborhood when taking daily trips or stopping into the local businesses on Lyndale. Specifically, the proposed two-way protected bike lane, new bus lane covering several blocks, improvements to pedestrian intersections, wider sidewalks with patio space for businesses, and green boulevards promise to improve the comfort of everyone traveling along this critical corridor.
This design does not include everything we’ve fought so hard for, but as Philip, a dedicated campaign volunteer who lives along Lyndale, emphasized, “this project is a big win for our community overall.” Thanks to our collective advocacy, today’s vote marks essential progress toward a Minneapolis where everyone can safely bus, bike, walk, and roll. But we can’t celebrate just yet. Right now, we need your help to keep pushing across the finish line!
The Mayor has until Wednesday, July 22, to either approve or veto the design proposal. Opponents are hoping Mayor Frey will block this redesign and hold up the bike lane and other improvements altogether. Help us ensure the necessary reconstruction of Lyndale Ave S actually happens and send an email to Mayor Frey today!
