Urge Minneapolis City Council to Override Mayor’s Bus Lane Veto

Mayor Jacob Frey recently vetoed full-time bus lanes on Hennepin Ave South. City Council members still have the power to save them. Speak up now.

The Minneapolis City Council recently passed Hennepin Avenue South redesign with full-time bus lanes, protected bike lanes, and important pedestrian improvements. The persistence of local residents and allies got us this win. But then just one day later, Mayor Jacob Frey swept in to veto the full-time bus lanes, eliminating them from the design.

Fortunately, the City Council still has the power to override the mayor’s veto and save the full-time bus lanes. Send a message telling your council member to do exactly that.

The City Council originally passed the Hennepin Avenue South redesign 8-5. We need 9 supportive votes to override the veto. Let’s keep the pressure on to get this done!

Full-time dedicated bus lanes on Hennepin Avenue South are critical to ensure Hennepin is a street designed for the people of this city—not just for cars—and to ensure the new METRO E Line will be able to successfully serve Minneapolis with fast, frequent, all-day service on Hennepin Avenue from day one.

Minneapolis can be a city that lives up to its promises to protect our air and climate, advance racial and economic equity, and encourage thriving neighborhoods. But to accomplish that we need better bus service and we need our leaders to to lead. Take action now.
