Move Minnesota launches No Car, No Problem public awareness campaign to inspire more people to choose public transit
“No car, no car payment.”
“No car, no crashes.”
“No car, no hassles.”
When we ask Minnesotans how they want to get around, they immediately identify the downsides of driving: high gas and maintenance costs, finding and paying for parking, the stress of sitting in endless traffic. In fact, our 2022 poll found that 1 in 5 Minnesota drivers would prefer to leave the car at home and bike, walk or use public transit instead.
But decades of car-centric infrastructure investments have starved public transit systems and billions in auto industry advertising have engrained positive myths associated with car ownership. Thanks to advocates and state leaders, things are starting to change. Here in Minnesota, we’re taking significant steps to shift our reputation from one of the top states for car ownership and usage to a national leader for more affordable, sustainable and equitable transportation options.
Over the past several years, our state has adopted exciting plans and policies to make biking, walking, rolling and public transit more accessible, comfortable and convenient. In the Twin Cities, that progress is evident. The new sales tax has given Metro Transit the resources it needs to improve service, expand coverage and reduce travel times on our buses and trains.
Now that conditions are changing, how do we make sure Minnesotans know that public transit, biking or walking are affordable, healthy and hassle-free ways of getting around? How do we show Twin Cities residents that have relied on their cars that we live in a community that’s full of options that are convenient, safe, and reliable?
Launched by Move Minnesota this summer, the No Car, No Problem campaign is a bold, provocative, and first-of-its-kind public awareness initiative that invites more people to explore public transit as a compelling transportation option for more of their daily trips.

With larger-than-life ads on buses and a full train wrap, residents across the region are seeing vibrant images and messaging that elevates the freedom and vitality we feel when we move through our communities in more active and connected ways. In addition to an estimated 85 million impressions on the streets, bus shelters, and rail stations, targeted digital ads through the Star Tribune will reach hundreds of thousands more throughout the three-month campaign.
We know people need more than encouragement. Trying different transportation options can feel complicated and overwhelming. To move from inspiration to action, the No Car, No Problem campaign created a one-stop-shop that gives people all the resources they need in one place.
We couldn’t be more excited to see this campaign rolling out in our neighborhoods over the past few weeks and we hope you’ll be ambassadors for the campaign, too! We’ll be sharing the campaign on social media and hope you’ll share it with your friends, family and networks. Together, we can flip the script on car-dependence and get more people onboard with transportation options that benefit our budgets, our communities and our climate!
