Since the Lyndale Avenue South reconstruction project kicked off in 2023, the Livable Lyndale campaign has mobilized thousands of residents around a vision for a road redesign that puts people first. But last month, despite clear demands from community members, Hennepin County released a final design that will compromise the safety and comfort of people biking, walking and taking public transit along this critical corridor.

Over the past two years, the Livable Lyndale campaign has collected over 2,400 signatures, 1,425 postcards, and over 250 personal stories in support of dedicated bus lanes, a separated bike path, and a vibrant pedestrian experience — all of which are now entirely absent from the design. We’ve made our priorities clear to Hennepin County but the City of Minneapolis plays a key role in this project, too.

Tell your Minneapolis City Council Member to withhold concept layout approval for this project until the design provides a dignified experience for everyone on Lyndale Avenue South, no matter how we get around.

The reconstruction of Lyndale Avenue will lock in changes to this critical corridor for the next 50 to 80 years, making the inclusion of dedicated bike and bus lanes an important step to meeting our climate goals—and safeguarding future generations. But the proposed final design from Hennepin County includes an ill-conceived shared use path that will create conflict and discomfort for all users, whether they walk, bike or roll. It also includes a 12-foot parking lane and bump outs instead of a dedicated bus lane, despite the potential bus rapid transit in coming years.

The proposed final design does not in good faith represent the Lyndale Avenue South that our community has been asking for: a Lyndale that prioritizes the safety of people over the convenience of cars. Tell your Minneapolis City Council Member to withhold concept layout approval until we see a final design that meets our community demands!
